Focus on student success has resulted in a higher ranking for University of Texas of the Permian Basin in this year's U.S. News & World Report college standings.

UTPB is now tied at No. 84 in the 2011 edition for regional universities. The school is tied with University of the Southwest (Hobbs, N.M.), Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore., and California State University in San Marcos, Calif. The ranking system has been changed from last year.

In addition, UTPB is in the top tier of the reconfigured listings, along with several other UT System schools. According to the magazine, the exclusive rankings list more than 1,400 schools nationwide and is now on newsstands.

UTPB has placed in the top-third of Washington Monthly's 2010 master's university rankings. This publication considers schools offering post-baccalaureate courses according to "their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). UTPB was ranked 168 of 550 universities.

"We are proud that the accomplishments of our students have enabled UTPB to rise in these rankings," President David Watts said. "Continuous improvement and a focus on student success are goals for the beginning of this new academic year."

DALLAS, Texas September 1, 2010 – An Odessa store was awarded top honors this month as ShopAcrossTexas.com released its annual Best Stores in Town list. The complete list will be released to the public throughout the coming weeks via ShopAcrossTexas.com. The Odessa store that made the list is Jonnie’s.

·         Jonnie’s: In the front room of Jonnie's you'll find traditional upholstered furniture, but it's the back room that really shines. You'll find cool ranch furnishings like tooled leather barstools and quirky accent pieces like metal replicas of old-fashioned cameras, plus an impressive collection of Jan Barboglio.

The list was determined through a six-week survey conducted on ShopAcrossTexas.com, in which readers voted for their favorite retail across the Lone Star state. The stores that made the list are giving shoppers one more reason to love them by providing Best Store discounts via printable coupons on ShopAcrossTexas.com! So before you head to one of the 2011 Best Stores in Town, check out the Discounts section on ShopAcrossTexas.com!

The Best Stores in Town project is designed to promote the best-of-the-best retail in more than 40 Texas cities. If you’ve got a few hours to kill, The Best Stores in Town tells you exactly where you should go for the best shopping experience the city has to offer. Many of the 2011 Best Stores in Town are independent retailers that are unique to each city, so you’ll know you’re getting an authentic experience when you shop there.

ShopAcrossTexas.com works to promote independent retail throughout the state of Texas—that is, stores that are independently owned, that do not belong to national chains. The phrase “shop local” directly pertains to independent retail. When you shop at a locally owned and operated store instead of a national chain, more of your dollars spent stay in that community, and more local jobs are supported.
